Representatives from the New York State Office of Parks and local officials gathered on Saturday at Gantry State Plaza in Long Island City to unveil some newly renovated basketball courts.
The cost of the makeover was $568,000 and part of that funding came from Governor Cuomo's NY Parks 2020 program.
The initiative is aimed at investing money in state parks.
To celebrate, local kids got a chance to practice their dribbling and passing skills during a free clinic on the new courts.
"It's so great and so vibrant. We've fixed all the walls, the fences, beautiful new hoops and stands and backboards. You know, it's just bright and shiny and ready to play," said Leslie Wright, the New York City Regional Director at the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation.
"With three boys, it's impossible to stay in the house. So now I have one more park that I can come to in the community," said Long Island City resident Michaiah Miller.
There's still a bit of work left on the project.
Officials say they want to raise the fences in the adjoining handball courts.
