AUSTIN, Texas -- Many people would say they'd be happy to see one less IRS office.
But when the processing center in Southeast Austin closes, about 2,400 people in Central Texas could lose their jobs.
Officials with the Internal Revenue Service announced the facility, which processes paper tax returns, will shut down in 2024.
Two other facilities in Covington, Kentucky and Fresno, California are also closing now that more people file their taxes electronically.
There was another round of closures back in 2003 when 10 centers merged into five.
When the Austin center closes, there will only be two paper processing centers left in the country.
