CHARLOTTE -- There's a new plan to battle long lines at Charlotte-Douglas International Airport.
Airport, TSA and airline officials told us Thursday they've been meeting once a week since Easter, brainstorming ideas so they can avoid a repeat of the Easter holiday weekend, when hundreds of people missed their flights because of lines at security checkpoints.
TSA Federal Security Director Kevin Frederick said problems with wait times have been a nationwide issue, but Charlotte isn’t scheduled to receive any new resources from the federal government.
But the airport hired some private contractors who will help passengers in the lobby area and make sure everyone is ready to go through security.
The TSA is doing their part by adjusting schedules and utilizing overtime pay.
Frederick said “For example we may have to open up and decide that we're going to open up a checkpoint about 45 minutes to an hour early if necessary. We'll open up the ticket counters at that time, so we're not playing catch up that whole day.”
But regardless of where you're flying out of or when you're flying, airport officials say always arrive two hours before your flight. And follow the rules for checked bags and carry-on bags.
