INDIAN TRAIL -- A 6-year-old Union County girl's life changed forever when her mother hit a tree on the way to school this past April.

The two survived the accident but Kai Gonzales suffered a spinal cord injury and is now in a wheelchair.

The child has made amazing improvement after doctors told her mother she wouldn't be able to move and need a feeding tube for the rest of her life.

Her family is now trying to raise money for a wheelchair accessible van.

“That would allow us to go out and do things like go get ice cream, go to the movies, go do things that she enjoyed before," said her mother, Shelby King.

The family is also having a fundraiser January 17th at Texas Roadhouse in Matthews.
