BELMONT, N.C. -- The Belmont City Council voted Monday night to fire Police Chief Charlie Franklin. He had been suspended for a few weeks following an investigation into his conduct with employees.
After four hours behind closed doors, a 4-to-1 vote made the termination official. Franklin says the city council reviewed a summary of complaints from some of his employees claiming he displayed misconduct and did not follow policy procedures. Franklin says he did nothing wrong.
“There's a double standard. I mean, there are employees of the city of Belmont who have done way worse than what they're accusing me of and have retained their job,” he said.
Belmont City Manager Barry Webb suspended Franklin in April. He will release a statement on Franklin's termination Tuesday morning.
Franklin said he could take legal action against the city soon.
