CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A great drink deserves a great meal! Great drinks help make the meals at The Broken Spoke.

It’s where the fare doesn’t just pair with the spirits, it’s made with it.

“You really want the smokiness to come out with the food, with the flavor of the whiskey,” said The Broken Spoke's executive chef, “Every time I make something I taste it with [the spirits]. I make sure they don't contradict each other with the flavor.”

The Broken Spoke is the restaurant of the Great Wagon Road Distillery, which claims to be Mecklenburg County’s oldest distillery -- and the first in the state with a restaurant.

The menu is seasonal, changing every few months. No matter the season, the dishes are always hearty.

“People are coming to taste our liquor,” Espinosa-Brewer said. “I want to make sure they're not boozing and not having anything in their stomach.

But for a constant staple, you can count on the house specialty -- The Broken Spokewich.
