WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — For the third year in a row, all North Carolina high school graduates will be able to attend Forsyth Technical Community College tuition free for one full year.

What You Need To Know

  • All aid from federal and state local grants and scholarship resources are applied first to the student's tuition

  • Incoming freshman Jeremiah Washington says the extension helps alleviate financial worry

  • He volunteers every weekend at a nursing home and hopes to be a social worker or therapist

After aid from the government is used, the college will use a variety of sources to cover remaining costs, including private aid funds through the college’s foundation.

Jeremiah Washington, an incoming freshman at Forsyth Tech, didn’t think the tuition-free perk would be extended for another year.

“It's really been helpful in terms of just letting me be able to get excited about being a student instead of fearful of how I’m going to pay for this,” Washington said.

Washington volunteers at a nursing home on the weekends. His grandmother used to work there and encouraged him to give back. After he started talking with the residents and getting to know them, he really fell in love it and has been here for three years.  While spending time there, he realized he wants to either become a social worker or a therapist.
