San Antonio school districts are making sure school meals are easily accessible.

Many districts are taking up the Community Eligibility Provision under the National School Lunch and School Breakfast Program.

School districts typically in high poverty areas and ones that meet certain requirements for need are able to offer every student a free breakfast and lunch every day.

Back to School: San Antonio Districts Work to Keep Lunch Free for Students in Need

Districts taking up Community Eligibility no longer have to collect and process individual meal applications.

"It's really important because the students need to eat so they can learn,” said Janice Phelps, Edgewood ISD Nutrition Director. “So it's really important that we start with the breakfast, then they have the lunch, and then if they stay after school for a program we'll give them a free after school snack."

Thousands of districts across the country have decided to continue working through the program this school year.
