ST. LOUIS—Wednesday’s sun helped melt packed snow and ice on area roads, but as temperatures plummet this evening, there is a potential for refreeze on the roads.

MoDOT's Traveler's Information Map shows most of the state's St. Louis routes are still snow covered, the agency told Spectrum News the interstates and most ramps are in good shape and that the sun really helped their crews’ progress Wednesday. MoDOT cameras show pavement on most views.

Bob Becker, MoDOT St. Louis District Maintenance Engineer, said the biggest challenge for his road crews are removing the hard packed snow. He explains it takes a lot more chemicals and time to remove it.

The storm earlier this week also brought blizzard-like conditions to the western part of Missouri, keeping MoDOT crews busy across the state.

Becker says that since the St. Louis area has such large traffic volume and number of interstates, MoDOT did work to ensure the region had the resources it needed during these types of “emergency events.”

It doesn’t appear there will be any downtime for Becker and his crews before the next storm. He says crews will be on 24/7 operations for the next several days trying to get all their routes back to “near normal condition” before the next winter storm later this week

St. Louis County worked around the clock earlier this week and says Tuesday night, crews finished clearing main roads and subdivisions. They have shifted efforts back to their 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. shifts and are now focusing on trouble spots.
