ST. LOUIS—Police are asking anyone who lives near I-55 and Loughborough, or was driving on the interstate Saturday night, to contact them if they have information about a shooting that critically injured a 16-year-old CBC student.
Investigators say officers are canvassing the neighborhood to see if any residents caught the incident on surveillance camera.
The teenager was a passenger in a car heading north on I-55 around 10:30 p.m. Saturday when police say he was shot by a stray bullet. The victim was driven to 4th and Walnut Street to meet the police. Investigators closed the interstate down Saturday evening and again Sunday morning to collect evidence in the area.
CBC High School has named the student as Colin Brown. A social media post says a prayer vigil was held Monday morning for him and asks for prayers for the student and his family.
The junior is a member of the CBC varsity hockey team which played in Affton Saturday night.
Brown was part of the O’Fallon Panther Hockey club. The club is holding a prayer vigil Monday night at the McKendree Recplex. The club is encouraging players to wear team jerseys to show support.
O’Fallon Panther head coach Scott Loehring tells Spectrum News he wants the public to know how highly the club thinks of Colin as not only a hockey player, but as a human being.
“The larger hockey community that we are so proud to be a part of will continue to support the Brown family in every way imaginable,” said Loehring.
The hockey club also is providing a fundraiser for the family. In the fundraiser, there is a statement from Colin Brown’s family.
It expresses gratitude to the SLMPD, the Illinois State Police and “the broader public safety community” for its continued efforts in to catch the suspects of what they call a “senseless crime.”
The family, including one member is identified as a former law enforcement official with over 28 years of experience, calls for greater efforts needed in St. Louis City and the surrounding area “to support police and equip them with the necessary tools to combat such senseless, violent gun crimes.”
