Brown continues to recover from the brain injury he sustained when protestors knocked him down on Aug. 9, 2024, on the tenth anniversary of Michael Brown's death, the 18-year-old who was shot and killed by then-Ferguson Police Officer Darren Wilson. Wilson resigned a few months after the shooting.

Body-worn footage and surveillance cameras from the incident captured 28-year-old Elijah Gantt of East St. Louis, Ill., and other protestors charging at officers, including Brown. Police allege Gantt ran after attacking Brown and kicked two other officers who tried to arrest him.

Since Michael Brown’s death, the department overhauled the racial makeup of the department, changed badges and police uniforms, added body cameras and had officers undergo frequent training on crisis intervention.

Travis Brown is the son of a retired St. Louis City police officer and father of two young daughters. After college, he joined the St. Louis County Police Department before joining the police in Ferguson in January this year.
