ST. LOUIS—The U.S. military says a Marine who died late last week in a training accident in North Carolina was from St. Charles County.

Sergeant Colin Arslanbas died in an accident near Camp Lejeune Thursday night. He was a 2019 graduate of Fort Zumwalt West High School and enlisted the following spring. He was promoted earlier this month and served as a Reconnaissance Marine assigned to the Maritime Special Purpose Force (MSPF), 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit.

He was previously awarded with the Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and the National Defense Service Medal.

The accident remains under investigation, and plans for his homecoming have not been finalized.

Arslanbas was a freshman classmate at Fort Zumwalt West of Jared Schmitz, a Marine who was among 13 service members killed in a terrorist attack at the Kabul, Afghanistan airport as the U.S. withdrew from the country in 2021. Schmitz completed his education at Fort Zumwalt South after his family moved.

“Rest easy Sgt. Colin Arslanbas. Semper Fi brotha. Such a tragedy. Your former classmate (my son) Jared and the other 12 heroes will take good care of you. Your mission is complete. Prayers to your family and friends,” Schmitz’s father Mark wrote in a social media post.
