A man has been arrested and charged with the shooting of Joshua Harris in Clayton earlier this week.

The Major Case Squad posted on X, formerly Twitter, early Friday morning that they had 18-year-old Trenell J. Johnson in custody. Johnson has been charged with second-degree murder and armed criminal action for Harris' death.

Harris, 41, of the 7500 block of Wydown, was found dead near his home Monday morning just before 5:30 a.m.

Investigators say Harris saw what appeared to be someone trying to break into his wife's vehicle parked on Wydown. Police say Harris confronted the suspects and video showed several shots being fired from a white Chrysler 300, resulting in Harris' death.

Prior to the shooting, Johnson and others were seen on surveillance video breaking into several vehicles Monday morning. The group was spotted in a white Chrysler 300 throughout the night. Johnson was spotted with a gun in his hands several blocks from the victim's home about 10 to 15 minutes before the shooting.

Following the homicide, Johnson was spotted on surveillance exiting the Chrysler 300, wearing the same clothing as surveillance depicted at the time of the shooting. Several individuals identified him from the video.

Johnson was charged in St. Louis County Circuit Court earlier this year with tampering with a motor vehicle, leaving the scene of an accident, unlawful use of a weapon and resisting arrest/detention/stop by fleeing.

On March 14, police say Johnson was driving a stolen vehicle in the Kinloch area and fled from police before hitting an occupied Metro bus. During a foot chase, police say Johnson displayed a pistol but was disarmed and taken into custody.

He was held on $30,000 bond but was released after the Bail Project posted 10% of that amount or $3,000, over the objection of prosecutors. Court records show status hearings on the case have been delayed due to court scheduling conflicts. The next court hearing in that case is set for Dec. 14.

The Clayton homicide is the first in the city since 2006.

The Major Case Squad said, "Our sympathies are with his family and loved ones. We as the community to join us in respecting their privacy as they grieve."
