Following the abrupt cancellation, an email to participants said there was not enough personnel to close and secure street intersections by the hired third-party security company.

“As we prepared for the final route check, it became apparent that the intersections were not secured due to absent personnel and considerable traffic continuing to stream onto the course, many drivers moving barricades themselves that were in place,” the email states.

The Moonlight Ramble is a charity event to support Trailnet, a St. Louis nonprofit aimed at “making walking and biking in St. Louis better for everyone,” according to the organization's website.

“As we were not able to provide you with a safe ride experience, we will be working through next steps in regards to refunds over the next few days,” the event email states.

“We will honor the donations made to Trailnet.”

Moonlight Ramble’s Facebook posts have received criticisms and dozens of negative comments from participants regarding how the event turned out and about Trailnet. The event page also received some positive remarks too.

“We’ve seen some negative comments aimed at Trailnet and we want to be clear that Trailnet’s involvement in Moonlight Ramble is as a charity beneficiary solely and they are not involved in the operations of the event. We proudly support the important work they do in St. Louis.”

Saturday’s event would have been St. Louis resident Courtney Strong’s first Ramble.

“I'm all for safety, especially with the way people drive in St. Louis and it being at night with risk of increased, possibly inebriated drivers too,” she told Spectrum News.

“I hope that in 2024, they can definitively plan, affirm and execute the event with full coverage along the ride route for our safety.”

In August, the Moonlight Ramble was rescheduled for September due to the rain.
