CHESTERFIELD, Mo.–A spokesman for AMC Theatres confirmed to Spectrum News Thursday that the company’s last day in business at the Chesterfield Mall location was May 18.
The 14-screen theatre was one of a few remaining anchor tenants at the property, which is slated for a massive redevelopment project that developers and the city of Chesterfield hope will result in a “downtown” city center.
The city of Chesterfield late last year approved more than $350 million in tax increment financing for the $2 billion project. A neighboring $1 billion redevelopment project is already underway.
The St. Louis Business Journal reported earlier this month that fixtures at the mall will be sold off at auction, with temporary tenants set to move out next year when work on the project begins.
“AMC regularly evaluates its locations and potential opportunities outside of its circuit, and makes decisions to close or acquire locations on a theatre-by-theatre basis based on what will best strengthen the Company going forward,” a company spokesman said in an email to Spectrum News Thursday.
Impacted employees were given the chance to relocate to another AMC theatre. The company has locations in St. Charles, Richmond Heights, Creve Coeur, and Farmington in Missouri, and in Edwardsville, Ill.
What of the theatre’s neighbors at The Cheesecake Factory, another longtime mall tenant?
“Chesterfield Mall has been a great location for us since we opened in 2006, and we have no current plans to relocate,” a spokeswoman said this week.
