ST. LOUIS–Metro Transit officials are giving riders a peek at two of the key safety components for its Secure Platform project as well as a timeline on the first two areas receiving the safety updates.

The project will be one in six construction “packages”, each comprising four to eight MetroLink stations. It was previously announced the work would start in the Metro East with construction possibly starting this fall.

Package 1: Jackie Joyner-Kersee Center, College, Emerson Park and Washington Park Metrolink Stations

  • Design phase- completed by summer 2023
  • Construction- expected to be complete by spring 2024

Package 2: Forest Park-DeBaliviere, Central West End, Cortex, Grand, Union Station, Civic Center and Delmar Loop MetroLink Stations

  • Design phase- scheduled to be completed in fall 2023
  • Construction- expected to be complete by summer 2024

Metro Transit says it will use two gates at the stations, a roto-gate and a swing gate for ADA and emergency access. Welded-wire fencing will also be used at the stations to provide both security and visual appeal.

“The new welded-wire fencing, roto-gates and swing gates will completely transform the MetroLink system, and in combination with new technology and 1,600 closed-circuit cameras monitored 24/7 through our Real Time Camera Center, we will provide our customers with a superior transit experience that is substantially safer and more secure,” said Kevin Scott.
