ST. LOUIS–Three days after two incumbents vying for a spot in April’s general municipal election for the St. Louis Board of Aldermen finished Tuesday night tied, provisional ballots appear to have decided the contest.

In the Ward 9 contest, Michael Browning finished first with a total of 1,003 votes Tuesday, followed by incumbents Tina Pihl and Michael Gras, who each had 868.

Since then, the St. Louis Board of Election Commissioners has been reviewing provisional ballots and were also waiting for Friday’s receipt of military ballots.

GOP Commissioner Gary Stoff tells Spectrum News Pihl received seven additional votes through provisional ballots and one from an absentee voter that was not counted Tuesday, for a total of 876 votes. Gras earned no additional votes. Browning finished with three more provisional votes and one other for a total of 1,007.

There were no military ballots tied to the Ward 9 race.

The results must still be certified.

Gras could not be reached for comment Friday afternoon. Stoff says there doesn’t appear to be a mechanism in state law that would give commissioners the authority for a recount in cases where the dispute is between a second and third place finisher.

Voters on April 4 will complete the transition of the current Board of Aldermen from 28 wards to 14.

Updated vote tallies for the other ward contests were not available Friday.
