AUBURN – The board of directors for the Auburn-Lewiston Municipal Airport will no longer pursue scheduled commercial services.
The airport will instead focus on supporting private and charter planes, according to airport director Jonathan LaBonte.
The airport had scheduled commercial services until the 1980s, said LaBonte.
“We’re approximate to Portland and as their commercial service grows, the airspace becomes more congested which causes opportunity for general aviation activity that wants to be in Southern Maine,” said LaBonte.
Located in Auburn, the Auburn-Lewiston Municipal Airport was constructed in 1935.
The airport’s board is updating its master plan and is looking for feedback from the community and local businesses to help the airport grow and adapt over the next decade.
A public meeting on the master plan will take place in the fall.
The airport’s board is looking to extend runways, build animal-friendly fencing and use sustainable aviation fuel.
