Freight trains will soon be going faster through parts of Maine.

CSX Transportation, which transports paper and forestry products, will increase the speed of its trains where it travels between 10 and 25 mph to 40 mph.

CSX stated it was making these changes to “improve the efficiency of rail operations and enhance capacity along the rail corridor.”

In addition, CSX reminds motorists and pedestrians to always stop, look and listen before going through a railroad crossing.

The company noted that its trains do not travel at specific times, so the company advises to always expect a train to be traveling.

CSX also says to stand at least 15 feet away from the tracks, because it’s difficult for freight trains to stop. According to the company, the average locomotive weighs about 400,000 pounds and takes more than a mile, or 18 football fields, for it to stop when traveling at 55 mph.

The company also advises motorists and pedestrians to be alert around railroads. This means refraining from texting, using headphones or other distractions preventing an individual from hearing a train approach.
