Travelers on the Downeaster may need to work around some service changes this week due to ongoing construction work in Wells, according to an announcement from Amtrak.

The service impacts will last through Sunday, Aug. 25.

For those who travel on trains 681 and 686, there will be no service at all to Saco or Old Orchard Beach, and for other destinations trains and charter buses will be used.

Trans 683 and 684, according to the announcement, have been canceled altogether. The Downeaster’s other six trains are running as usual.

The changes are due to ongoing track construction work in Wells.

The plan, according to Amtrak, is to extend a passing track from two miles to six miles.

Workers are also building a boarding platform next to the second track at the Wells station, and an elevated pedestrian bridge to allow access to both tracks.

“These elements will improve reliability and schedule flexibility of both the Amtrak Downeaster and freight trains and will eventually support the addition of a 6th daily Downeaster round-trip between Wells and Brunswick, Maine,” the Northern New England Passenger Rail Authority stated on its website.
