Police evacuated the Cumberland County Courthouse for just over an hour Thursday morning after a bomb threat that police believe was a hoax.
The threat came into the courthouse via email around 10:15 a.m.
“Out of an abundance of caution, the Portland Police Department called in one of its explosive K9 units to sweep the building, and nothing was found,” police said in a statement.
The building re-opened around 11:30 a.m. Police did not indicate whether they had any suspects but mentioned a series of hoax bomb threats made Wednesday afternoon to capitol buildings in six different states, including Augusta.
“We have been in touch with our state and federal partners and believe this may be related to the threats that were called into several state capitol buildings around the country yesterday,” police said.
The state house in Augusta was evacuated briefly Wednesday afternoon after receiving a similar bomb threat, also via email. It was one of several state capitols across the nation that received similar threats.
Police searched the building and found no sign of explosives.
