One person was killed in a single-vehicle crash Sunday in Steuben.

State troopers responded to a report of a crash at around 1:30 p.m., according to the Maine Department of Public Safety.

“Initial investigation indicates the driver of a 2013 Chevy Malibu was traveling southbound on Unionville Road in Steuben when the vehicle came over the hill and went airborne,” department spokesperson Shannon Moss stated. “The driver lost control and the vehicle struck a large tree on the passenger side. The passenger was discovered deceased at the scene.”

The driver, Chase Atwater, 18, of Steuben, was transported to a hospital with minor injuries, according to Moss.

The passenger has been identified as Cole Merchant, 17, of Sullivan.

The crash remains under investigation.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation, Moss stated, but speed appears to be a factor.
