A missing Virginia man has been found safe and sound in the woods of New Sweden early this morning, according to the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife.

Donald Cook, 64, of Harrisburg, Va., was reported missing by his family at 10:15 p.m. Thursday. Family members first noticed he was gone at about 3:30 p.m. that day, and spent hours searching for him before calling for help.

According to the department, “he became lost behind the vacation house he was renting while looking for moose tracks.”

By 11 p.m., game wardens, including Warden Preston Pomerleau and his K9 partner, Gordon, were searching the area for Cook. Gordon, according to the department, found Cook shortly after 1 a.m. Friday. He was about half a mile from the rental property.

“Cook was dehydrated and cold. Game Wardens gave Cook some water and warm clothes, then assisted him out of the woods,” the department said in a statement.

Cook was examined at the scene by emergency medical personnel, but was not taken to the hospital.
