Two men died by drowning within two days in separate accidents, according to the Maine Warden Service.

Game wardens were called to Little Narrows Pond in Lincoln Sunday after a man who was swimming off a pontoon boat went under and never resurfaced about 2:30 p.m.

An initial search by wardens, the Maine Forest Service, Lincoln Fire Department and Howland Fire Department was unsuccessful, so the warden dive team was called in to help, according to the service.

The dive team found Brian Minott, 61, of New Gloucester, in about 30 feet of water about 1,000 feet from shore at 10 p.m. Sunday.

Then on Monday afternoon, game wardens responded to a call for a body in the water in the West Branch of the Penobscot River in an area known as the Big Eddy.

Scott Newton, 38, of Madison, was whitewater rafting with two other people when they were all thrown into the water after their raft flipped, wardens said.

All three were wearing life jackets and helmets. Two made it to shore, but Newton appeared unresponsive and continued to float down the river.

Several people helped retrieve Newton’s body from the Big Eddy, wardens said.
