Police shot and killed a 28-year-old Dresden man Sunday after he allegedly pointed a handgun at a member of the Maine State Police Tactical Team.

Police were executing an arrest warrant for Frank Foss Jr., who was wanted for possession of a firearm by a prohibited person and bail violations associated with a prior domestic violence incident, according to the Maine Department of Public Safety.

The shooting occurred while police were searching a wooded area around a home on Hankerson Road in Chelsea.

Police say a tactical team member found Foss in the woods and Foss pointed a gun at the team member, prompting Maine State Police Detective Scott Duff to shoot and kill Foss.

Duff has been placed on administrative leave, which is standard following any officer involved shooting.

The attorney general’s office will investigate.
