One person died by suicide after a standoff in Hallowell that lasted more than four hours Tuesday afternoon, according to Hallowell police.

Officers responded just after 12:30 p.m. at 61 Water St.

Police did not say how the situation began.

“The standoff lasted approximately 4 1/2 hours and was sadly concluded when the person involved took their own life,” police said in the statement.

Police are did not releaseing the identity of the person who died, but said no one else was hurt.  

Portions of Water Street were shut down during the incident.
