The driver of the vehicle involved in a crash in December 2022 that killed four Maine Maritime Academy students has been indicted on 17 charges by a Hancock County Grand Jury, according to a statement from Maine State Police.
Joshua Goncalves-Radding, 20, of North Babylon, N.Y., was indicted on April 6 on four counts of manslaughter, five counts of aggravated operating under the influence, two counts of reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon, three counts of driving to endanger and one count each of criminal speed, forgery and unlawful use of a license. A judge accepted the indictments on April 7.
The charges stem from an accident that happened in Castine on Dec. 10, 2022, at about 2 a.m. Police said Goncalves-Redding was driving a 2013 Range Rover carrying six of his fellow Maine Maritime Academy students on Shore Road (Route 166) when the vehicle “left the road and struck a tree before erupting into flames.”
Four of the passengers died in the crash.
Police identified the victims as Brian Kenealy, 20, of York, Chase Fossett, 21, of Gardiner, Luke Simpson, 22, of Rockport, Mass. and Riley Ignacio-Cameron, 20, of Aquinnah, Mass.
Goncalves-Radding and the other two passengers, whom police declined to identify, survived.
“After an extensive investigation, it was determined that speed and alcohol were factors in the crash,” police said.
Police said following the indictments, Goncalves-Radding will be formally charged.
