A moose was killed in a collision in Aurora when it was struck by two ambulances on Airline Road, according to the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department.
The incident happened near the Green Farm Road intersection at 8:39 p.m. Friday, when two ambulances that were headed northbound could not avoid the moose in the road, police said.
“Neither driver were injured and both ambulances were able to be driven from the scene,” the department said in a statement.
The drivers were Thomas Gutow, 52, and Cameron Doyle, 26.
Neither ambulance had any patients aboard. Both ambulances were from different companies, police said, and just happened to be on the same road at the same time when the accident occurred.
Moose can be difficult to see during twilight and nighttime hours. There large size and tall stature makes them especially dangerous to drivers.
May and June are peak moose and deer collision months, according to the Maine Department of Transportation.
Between 2016 and 2020, Maine recorded 1,353 highway collisions with Moose, about half of which occurred in Aroostook County.
That number is dwarfed by deer collisions, which numbered 26,6347 during the same five-year period.
