Political leaders in Maine has begun reacting to the news that former President Donald Trump has won his bid against Vice President Kamala Harris.

Gov. Janet Mills acknowledged that while Harris won the state, there were mixed opinions throughout the state on the outcome of the national election.

“Amid these strong and differing feelings, I urge all Maine people to remain respectful of and civil towards one another,” she said. “We are one state and one people and we are bound together by far more than a single election or political party wins or losses. We share a history, a broader community, and a deep and abiding love for this place that we are fortunate to call home.”

Mills said she was “disappointed” with Trump’s win, she said she would any president who helped the state, and oppose anyone who did something that was bad for Maine’s people.

The Maine Republican Party also responded to the election.

"Congratulations to President Trump!” said Maine GOP Chairman Joel Stetkis. “I'm proud that the great state of Maine contributed to his historic victory. We have so much to do to help regular working people get ahead, and it's going to take strong leadership. Donald Trump has proven that he is that leader -- and We the People have spoken."

Maine GOP Executive Director Jason Savage also weighed in, saying, "President Trump has been chosen by the people of this great country because it is time for change. It's time for a better future for all Mainers and Americans under President Donald J. Trump. I want to thank everyone who worked so hard to make this happen -- you are the engine that fuels our democratic process."
