U.S. Rep. Jared Golden issued a statement Wednesday afternoon declaring victory in the tight race against Republican challenger Austin Theriault.

Multiple media outlets were calling the race in favor of Golden as of Wednesday afternoon, but the numbers remained tight, with the Associated Press putting Golden in the lead at 50.3% to Theriault’s 49.4% with 89% of precincts reporting in.

Theriault did not seem to be ready to concede the race, as evidenced by a statement released just before 2 p.m. Wednesday.

"This race still remains too close to call," Theriault campaign spokeswoman Preya Samsundar said. "We're well within the margin that would trigger a state-funded automatic recount, and every vote should be counted."

Despite the narrow margin, Golden issued a statement celebrating the win.

“Anyone who has observed this race knows that this was my toughest election yet,” Golden said. “Across the country, no Democrat has withstood stronger headwinds from the top of the ticket, the pundits, and the organized opposition. This race was hard fought. And hard-won. It is, therefore, the victory I’m most proud of.”

Golden congratulated Theriault, calling him “a fierce competitor who offered a serious and well-run challenge.”

Golden also thanked his wife, two daughters, his campaign team and his staff in Washington. He also thanked the voters.

“I want you to know that I am going to continue on with this work for the next two years with everything that I have to give to deliver results for you and your family,” he said.
