A recent poll of Mainers by the University of New Hampshire shows that housing is by far the number one issue for voters right now.
The poll found that 30% of Mainers list “Housing” as a top issue. It is the largest single issue picked by the respondents, with the next most popular topic, “Cost of living,” coming in at 11%.
“Three in 10 Mainers (30%) say that housing is the most important problem facing the state,” the pollsters wrote.
While the number refers to respondents in Maine overall, the university went on to clarify: “Democrats in Maine are more likely than others to mention housing while Republicans are more likely than others to mention the cost of living, jobs or the economy, the political left or leftist politicians, or taxes.”
The poll found that after housing and cost of living, “Jobs/Economy” came in third at 9%, and “Homelessness” came in fourth at 6%.
The poll, released Thursday, is the latest in a series of politically-related polling by the university’s survey center. Nearly 1,000 Mainers responded to the survey between Aug. 15 and Aug. 19.
Thursday’s numbers also indicated 53% of respondents approve overall of Gov. Janet Mills’ job performance, while 43% disapprove. This rating has remained largely unchanged since the beginning of this year, the pollsters found.
