A new poll from the University of New Hampshire shows Vice President Kamala Harris is virtually neck-and-neck with former President Donald Trump among voters in northern Maine, with less than three months to go until the presidential election in November.

Statewide, Harris has a wider lead. The poll found that if the election were held today, 55% of Maine voters would vote for Harris, with only 38% choosing Trump.

In Maine’s southern first congressional district, Harris leads Trump with 62% of voters to Trump’s 33%.

Farther north, however, the race is much closer. In the second congressional district, Harris leads but by a much slimmer margin – 49% of voters to Trump’s 44%.

“Nearly half of likely voters in the state expect Harris to win,” the university wrote in a statement accompanying results of the poll. “Harris is more personally popular than Trump and is rated more highly on several personal attributes, particularly physical and mental fitness and temperament.”

The poll also asked who voters believed would actually win the election, and 51% of voters predicted Harris would win, while 37% believe Trump will win.

The poll found 58% of Mainers were “enthusiastic” about Harris choosing Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, and 29% were “satisfied.” For Trump’s choice, Ohio Sen. J.D. Vance, 37% said they were enthusiastic about the choice, with 47% being satisfied.

Overall, the poll found 46% of Mainers had “a favorable opinion” of Walz, while only 30% of Mainers said the same for Vance.

The findings are the latest version of the Pine Tree State Poll conducted by the UNH Survey Center.
