Mainer Julia Gagnon, who wowed judges and audiences alike on the national television talent show “American Idol,” had to say goodbye Sunday night.
Gagnon, 21, of Cumberland, had made it into the top seven contestants, but after audiences voted live online during the broadcast, she was not among the top five chosen by voters.
Earlier in the evening, Gagnon, bedecked in a shiny pink dress and silver boots, performed The B-52s’ “Rome,” wowing judges Lionel Richie, Katuy Perry and Luke Bryan.
“It’s really amazing to watch you challenge your confidence level and you keep coming out here and acing the course, and that’s what this show’s all about: letting you grow,” Bryan said.
Gagnon followed up in the second half of the show singing Adele's "Set Fire to the Rain," earning even more praise.
"Way to go to make an Adele song your song," Richie said.
At the end of the night, host Ryan Seacrest noted that just under 19 million people cast votes for their favorite contestant. The seven competitors waited until all five names were called. In the end, Gagnon, along with fellow contestant McKenna Breinholt, were eliminated.
If Gagnon was disappointed, she didn’t show it. She hugged the final contestant voted in, Emmy Russell, and held hands with Breinholt, saying “Thank you” and smiling the entire time.
On Gagnon’s Facebook page, fans expressed shock at her being eliminated, but noted other singers who had been eliminated from the show went on to have successful singing careers, and offered words of encouragement.
“You are a rock star, Julia!” said one commenter who identified themselves as Sheri Howe. “You rocked the stage every single time, grew so much and became a confident rock star! And such good sportsmanship! You always rooted on the others! Keep your head up high you will go places!”
