A Bar Harbor state lawmaker has resigned her position to take a new job.

Democratic Rep. Lynne Williams, who represents Bar Harbor, Mount Desert, Lamoine and the Cranberry Isles, is leaving because of “an unexpected professional opportunity that is not compatible with the Legislature,” according to a letter to House Speaker Rachel Talbot Ross.

The resignation is effective immediately.

Although the legislative website indicates Williams resigned effective April 1, the notice to lawmakers did not go out until today when the letter to Talbot Ross was printed in the House Calendar.

Williams’ departure will not affect the balance of power in the House, which is controlled by Democrats 80-68, with two independents and one vacancy.

An attorney, Williams was twice elected to serve in the House.

It is not yet clear when a special election will be held to fill the seat. Lawmakers have about a week to go in the current legislative session, although their terms don’t officially end until December.

All 186 House and Senate seats will be on the November ballot.
