BOOTHBAY — With a chill in the air and dark nights that come early, the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens will welcome visitors back starting Saturday for Gardens Aglow.

Now in its 10th year, the light show will feature more than 750,000 lights, which would extend from Boothbay to South Portland if you laid them out end to end.

“Like every year, it’s a magical experience,” said Gretchen Ostherr, president and CEO. “It’s totally immersive. You’re surrounded by lights and sculptures and all kinds of beauty, and you get to be with your friends and your family and have a wonderful experience out in nature.”

New this year is a giant lobster, and the gardens brought back fairy houses, a display that proved popular in previous years. Two of the gardens’ giant wooden trolls — Roskva and Lilja — get in on the action too and are part of the one-mile-long route.

It takes more than 100 people nearly three months to decorate the gardens for the show, which drew 110,000 people last year.

Ostherr said since they started the show 10 years ago, others in town have joined in to create Boothbay Lights which helps extend the tourist season in the region.

The local chamber runs a shuttle from downtown Boothbay Harbor to the gardens, giving people a chance to support local restaurants and shops before or after visiting Gardens Aglow.

“It started in part to figure out a way to keep our team employed into the winter,” she said. “I think it’s really had that effect throughout the peninsula in that it extends the season for everyone.”

Tickets must be purchased in advance and cost $21 for adults; $18 for seniors and veterans; $12 for children. A family rate of $54 is available for two adults and two children.

The show runs Nov. 16-Dec. 31, Thursdays through Sundays. Tickets are available at mainegardens.org.
