One man is in custody following a two-and-a-half hour standoff in Portland Saturday night.
Police were called to Saint John Street shortly before 8:50 p.m. following a report of a man who came outside and pointed a gun at someone before returning to an apartment.
Police set up a perimeter around the apartment and tried to reach the man via phone and loudspeaker. Portland’s special reaction and crisis negotiation teams were also deployed.
Police were unable to communicate with the man, and so used “noise flash diversionary devices in an attempt to gain the subject’s attention,” according to a news release.
“Other non lethal methods were used to get the suspect to surrender peacefully,” the release stated.
The standoff ended at 12:24 a.m. on Sunday when Keith Fitzell, 63, of Portland emerged from the building, police said.
Fitzell was charged with criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon and creating a police standoff.
Fitzell was also wanted on a warrant for failing to appear in court, according to police.
“Numerous weapons were located inside of Mr. Fitzell’s apartment,” the release stated.
Investigators ask that anyone with information call them at (207) 874-8575.
