A Leeds man has been arrested and charged in connection with the alleged killing of a missing man from Windham, according to the Maine Department of Public Safety.

The family of Alex Jackson, 34, of Windham reported him missing in May 2023.

Following a nearly year-long investigation, Joseph Chute of Leeds was arrested Friday and charged with murder, the department stated in a news release.

“Chute was arrested Friday evening without incident and transported to the Androscoggin County Jail where he is being held without bail,” the release stated. “The body of Jackson has not been recovered at this time.”

No further information was available.

Chute was scheduled to make an initial appearance in Androscoggin County Superior Court on April 1.

Maine State Police, Windham Police Department, Lewiston Police Department, Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Office and the New Hampshire State Police aided in the investigation.
