Police issued a summons on Friday to an Augusta man, charging him with defacing the Maine Law Enforcement Officers Memorial over Memorial Day weekend on May 28.
Justin Larrabee, 39, of Augusta, is facing a charge of aggravated criminal mischief, which police said is related to the memorial defacing and a similar incident of vandalism several days later at the Capitol complex.
Police initially reported someone had used red spray paint to write messages on the memorial in the early morning hours of Sunday, May 28.
Capitol Police and the Augusta Police Department executed a search warrant on Riverside Road in Augusta at about 3 p.m. Friday, which led to the summons.
“On behalf of the Maine Chiefs of Police Association and the Augusta Police, I want to recognize the investigators with the Augusta and Capitol Police for the countless hours they spent to bring this investigation to a successful resolution,” said Augusta Police Chief Jared Mills.
Maine Chiefs of Police Association had offered a $1,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and prosecution of those responsible for the vandalism.
Cumberland Police Chief Charles Rumsey, president of the Maine Chiefs of Police Association, previously. described the vandalism as a “deeply disturbing crime.”
“This memorial, which contains the names of eighty-eight Maine troopers, deputies, game wardens, and officers who gave their lives in service to the people of this state is paramount to us,” he said.
