A collapsed culvert in South Portland could become a headache for some commuters.

The city closed Sawyer Street to all vehicle and foot traffic between Marsh and Arlington roads Tuesday morning and detoured traffic following the collapse.

That section of road won’t reopen until the end of the week, according to a news release from the city.

The city is advising motorists to plan alternate routes.

South Portland Bus Service Route 21 -- Willard Square/Southern Maine Community College -- will be rerouted via Marsh Road from Sawyer Street during repair, according to the release.

“Last minute changes to the detour might be needed if trucks and equipment make it difficult for buses to turn onto Marsh (Road),” the city stated.

Most stops along Ocean and Sawyer streets will remain open, but the stops for Sawyer Street and Sterling Avenue will and Sawyer Street at Mitchell Road will not be accessible. Riders should instead wait at stops on Cottage Road, the city stated, and delays should be expected.

Riders can call the bus dispatch at (207) 767-5556 to confirm the route and stop status.
