Officials have mapped out a location for a new connector road from the Maine Turnpike into Gorham.
The road will run from Exit 45 in South Portland, through Scarborough near the Westbrook line and eventually connect with the Gorham Bypass off Route 114, south of Gorham Village, cutting through Scarborough according to the Maine Turnpike Authority.
“Many good early conversations have taken place, and we now look forward to broadening the dialogue,” Scarborough Town Manager Tom Hall said.
Officials have been planning such a connector since 2014, according to the turnpike authority.
“The need for such a connection has been part of regional transportation conversations for over two decades,” officials wrote in the announcement.
The authority did not provide a dollar estimate for the project but indicated that toll revenue would fully fund the work.
The authority has launched a website describing the project and functioning as a place for the public to send feedback and ask questions. In addition, a public meeting is planned for March in Gorham. The meeting’s date has not yet been determined.
