Dry and windy conditions across the Hawaiian islands will elevate the risk for spreading fires through today, prompting Red Flag Warnings and Wind Advisories.
Strengthening trade winds paired with low relative humidity will put the Aloha State at a higher risk for wildfire spread today.
Red Flag Warnings are in effect until 6 p.m. HST Monday for leeward areas of Maui County and the Big Island.
Given the elevated risk, it is important to limit the use of flammable objects and machinery that could create sparks. Avoid outdoor burning and be cautious of anything that produces enough heat to burn, such as car exhaust on grass.
If a fire begins, it could spread quickly and in unexpected ways.
As temperatures rise during the day, relative humidity levels will drop to their lowest by the afternoon.
Everyone will see winds between 20 to 30 mph.
Gusts reaching up to 50 mph are possible through Monday evening, but some islands could see even stronger gusts move over or downwind of the mountain and valley areas.
With this, Wind Advisories are also in effect until 6 p.m. HST on Monday.
A weak front is expected to move across the islands from the northwest to southeast later Monday into Tuesday, increasing atmospheric moisture and the chance of showers. This, combined with weakening trade winds, should reduce fire danger overall by Tuesday.
