Hurricane Dora will move away from the Hawaiian Islands on Wednesday, but dry and windy conditions will persist through much of the day, keeping parts of the state under an elevated risk for spreading fires.

Even though high winds and surf will steadily subside as Dora tracks farther west, dry and gusty conditions on Wednesday will still work against the ongoing efforts to extinguish the wildfires burning in parts of the state.

In addition to the heightened fire risk, high surf could also still impact Hawaii's eastern shores through Wednesday evening as well.

Strong winds

Regardless of any fluctuations in strength, Dora is moving away from the Hawaiian Islands, which means the worst of its impacts are past. Winds have eased a bit, and will continue to do so as Dora heads west, but many portions of the islands could still see gusts reach up to 50 mph during the day.

With this, Wind Advisories remain in effect until 6 p.m. on Wednesday.

Thereafter, winds will steadily ease as the storm heads farther west.

Increased fire danger

Along with the gusty winds, dry air flowing in from the east will continue to keep parts of the state under an elevated risk of spreading fires, whether new or ongoing.

As a result, Red Flag Warnings also remain in effect for all Leeward portions of each Hawaii Island through Wednesday evening.

In order to prevent fires from starting, limit any outdoor burning and refrain from using equipment that sparks easily outdoors. Also, please extinguish and dispose cigarette butts.

High surf

Big swells from Dora will also subside as the storm heads farther west, but some of the eastern-facing shores will still deal with rough surf and large-breaking waves on Wednesday.

With wave heights reaching 7 to 10 feet, a High Surf Advisory remains in effect for the eastern shores of Maui, Molokai, Oahu and Kauai through Wednesday evening.
