The eastern Pacific hurricane season runs from May 15 to Nov. 30.

The average eastern Pacific hurricane season has 15 named storms, eight hurricanes and four major hurricanes, with the first named storm typically forming in early to mid-June.

These names recycle every six years, just like the Atlantic names, which means we last saw these names in 2016.

The only names that don’t recycle are the ones that become retired.

Where do we get these names?

The World Meteorological Organization comes up with the names for the seasons every year.

They retire a name if a storm is extremely deadly or costly, making it insensitive or inappropriate to use in the future. They then come up with a new name to replace it the next time they use the same list.

Prepare before the storm

Remember to prepare now before a storm or hurricane hits your area.

Some things that you should do now are:

  • Know your evacuation zone
  • Gather supplies for an emergency kit
  • Create a hurricane plan and review it with your family and friends
  • Have extra water, food, clothes and blankets ready
  • Have a list of important documents and medications
  • Have cash available in case power goes out

We never know for sure how many storms or hurricanes we’ll get, but we can prepare for whatever may happen. Remember, it only takes one storm to make it a bad season.
