The Ellison Onizuka Kona International Airport at Keahole will receive $1.2 million to replace and upgrade its fire alarm system, Sen. Brian Schatz, D-Hawaii, announced Monday.

“This new fire alarm system will help ensure that Kona International Airport meets current safety standards, and help keep people safe,” said Schatz, chair of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Transportation, Housing and Urban Development.

The new funding comes from the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, which is bringing $2.8 billion to Hawaii, according to Schatz.

At least $246 million was set aside for Hawaii’s airports from the Airport Terminal Program, created by the infrastructure bill. It provides funding for terminal renovations and expansions.

The Kona airport is the busiest on Hawaii Island, serving transpacific and inter-island flights.
