HANALEI, Hawaii — Hawaii Department of Transportation officials said Kauai’s Kuhio Highway between Hanalei Plantation Road and Ohiki Road will be closed to all traffic beginning on Jan. 2 every night.

After the first week of roadwork, closures will continue nightly on a Sunday through Thursday schedule from 11 p.m. to 5:30 a.m., officials said in a news release.

The closures will continue until February when the project expects to be completed.

The $2.9 million project will replace the timber decking, steel bolts and corroded steel members on the Hanalei Bridge. The steel structure will be repainted.

The project will require decking refurbishment, so first responders will be stationed on either side of the bridge, as they will not be able to drive across the bridge while the deck is being replaced.

Electronic message boards will provide information about the closures. All roadwork is weather permitting. Check the HDOT’s Kauai road work list for future scheduled closure information for the Hanalei Bridge.
