On Tuesday morning, the Honolulu Fire Department rescued a worker who fell into an open manhole at the Sand Island Wastewater Treatment Plant.

The man fell about 15-feet into the open manhole, suffered a traumatic injury, and could not exit on his own, according to a HFD news release.

The trapped worker was in an oxygen-deficient environment, but was still conscious and able to communicate with HFD personnel.

Rescue and Hazardous Materials personnel performed atmospheric monitoring to confirm the confined space was not dangerous to life and health. At the same time, HFD staff used a rescue tripod and entered on a self-contained breathing apparatus to conduct a medical assessment and perform basic life support. Rescuers then raised the worker via rope rescue equipment.

Once out of the manhole, HFD transferred the workers' care to Emergency Medical Services.
