KAHULUI, Hawaii — The Maui Police Department announced the establishment of a dedicated Cold Case Detail — also known as Charlie Detail — comprised of highly experienced investigators that will primarily focus on unsolved homicides and missing persons cases, according to a news release.
The initiative started with MPD’s involvement in documenting missing people caught in or displaced by the Lahaina wildfire. Thousands were initially reported missing, but with the efforts of MPD personnel and partner law enforcement agencies, the number has been reduced to four.
The Cold Case Detail seeks to find justice and closure for affected families of unsolved homicides and missing persons.
Investigators in the unit will continue to investigate the remaining cases from the August wildfire and reinvestigate all available evidence. With the latest investigative techniques and modern forensic techniques at their disposal, the unit will identify new leads and information from cold cases and open missing persons reports.
“Our goal is to bring closure to the families affected by these unsolved crimes and ensure that justice is served by holding perpetrators accountable,” said Chief of Police John Pelletier in the release. “We believe that in addition to solving these cases, this detail will help build and maintain trust between our department and the community we serve.”
Anyone with information or leads related to unsolved homicides are missing persons cases are asked to contact the Cold Case Detail at coldcase@mpd.net or 808-270-5575.
