HILO, Hawaii — The Philippine flag will be raised at the Hilo county building and West Hawaii Civic Center in Kona to celebrate Filipino American History Month from Oct. 2 through 6, according to a Hawaii County news release.
Mayor Mitch Roth invites the Filipino community and the public to participate in a special flag-raising ceremony at 7:30 a.m. on Oct. 2 at the county building in Hilo.
“This gesture signifies the rich history and invaluable contributions of the Filipino American community to our county and the nation at large,” said Mayor Roth in the release. “It’s an opportunity for us to come together in unity and appreciation.”
Jane Clement, executive assistant to Mayor Roth and a prominent Filipino community leader, added, “Seeing the Philippine flag raised in Hilo and Kona is a testament to the enduring strength and resilience of the Filipino American community. It’s a moment of pride for all of us, reminding us of our roots and the bridges we’ve built together.”
The flag raising is a symbol of the “enduring ties and shared histories between Filipinos and Americans,” states the release.
Every October across the nation, Filipino American History Month is celebrated to recognize the significant roles that Filipino Americans have played throughout U.S. history.
Mayor Roth invites the public to the Oct. 2 event to pay homage to the shared cultural heritage and achievements of the Filipino American community.
