HONOLULU — The City and County of Honolulu are seeking qualified artists to create a new work of art on the exterior of the Ewa Mahiko District Park Gymnasium in Ewa Beach.

The gymnasium, built in 2013, is a multi-purpose indoor facility on Renton Road between Alaiki Street and Park Row in Ewa Beach.

The 10,000-square-foot building features a full-size indoor court for basketball, volleyball and other sports.

The art will be commissioned as part of the Art in City Buildings program, officials said in a news release.

The Requests for Qualifications is open to all artists or teams of artists qualified to work for the City and County of Honolulu with an awarded budget of $180,000.

The Commission on Culture and Arts suggests the theme for the artwork should relate to the history of the surrounding areas of Ewa Makiko District Park.

The Oahu Railway and Land Company Railroad System, Kapapapuhi Shoreline Park, Ewa Honouliuli Internment Camp, and Ewa Sugar Mill are historically and culturally significant sites located nearby.
