Honolulu Fire Department units were dispatched at 9:03 a.m. Tuesday, after receiving a call reporting that the fire had rekindled on the Makaha side of Kaena Point.
According to Capt. Jaimie Song from the HFD public information office, 15 units were dispatched and are currently on the scene with crews working to put out the fire. Song said that the fire has not spread any further, and it remains contained.
She said Honolulu Police Department officers are on the North Shore side of Kaena Point to clear the area of hikers so fire suppression efforts can continue safely.
Song added that it is brush fire season and amid the heightened awareness of wildfires with the situations on Maui and Hawaii Island, people have been calling in when they see smoke.
As of this time, Song was not aware of any risk to the Kaena Point Bird Sanctuary. There are no threats to any structures.
A brush fire on the Keawaula side of Kaena Point State Park in Makaha that was reported just after noon on Monday was declared 90% contained just after 7 p.m., according to the Honolulu Fire Department.
Fifteen HFD units fought the blaze along with nine federal fire department units, assisted in the air by the Department of Forestry and Wildlife.
Honolulu police and Ocean Safety personnel assisted six hikers off the Kaena Point Trail.
The brush fire that burned 20 acres was declared under control after 3 p.m. and reported at 90% containment just after 7 p.m. No structures were destroyed.
